Hello from New York.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Hi, I’m Jason.
I write books.

Former software engineer.
Starting a new chapter.

Born and raised in New York, Jason Tadao Lei is a former software engineer who turned a layoff into the plot twist that launched his writing career. Fueled by a love of technology, science fiction, and an imagination that rarely switches off, he writes about fantastic futures that feel unsettlingly close. His goal: to leave readers wondering, “What if?” and then, “How long until?”

When he isn’t dreaming up tomorrow’s possibilities and nightmares, Jason shares his home with two rescue companions: Bao Bao, a mutt, and Mochi Mochi, a cat. Neither is particularly impressed by his work, but both insist on supervising.

Nobody Is Sad in Halcyon Springs

About the book

In 2151, a personal AI called a Tether helps manage nearly every part of life, including how much pain people feel. So when the Nevada town of Halcyon Springs reports thirty-one days without a single unhappy moment, insurance investigator Teo Hayashi-Quiroga is sent to find out why.

What he finds is a dead doctor nobody thought to report, residents humming the same lullaby at 3:07 a.m., and a little girl whose tears have gone unnoticed. With forensic mind-coroner Anya at his side and his sharp-tongued, outdated AI Gus in his pocket, Teo follows a mystery that reaches far beyond one perfect town.

A global software update is approaching. The calm could soon belong to everyone. To stop it, Teo and Anya must confront a terrifying question: what do we lose when we let someone else decide which feelings are worth keeping?
